Letting children help in their birthday party preparation is a great way for parents to spend time with them as well as to reduce party costs.

Birthday parties are a big deal for kids. And older children will appreciate birthday parties more if they have a say in how the parties should be planned and organized. Here are some tips to get kids more involved in their own birthday celebrations. The ideas are fun, affordable and certainly give parents and kids more bonding opportunities.

Kids Make own Birthday Invitation Cards

Instead of buying birthday invitation cards, make your own. This is an excellent idea for families with young budding artists. Even if there aren’t any, most kids enjoy coloring and craft. Look for ideas on the Internet. Websites like netfuncards.com, bluemountain.com and 123printcards.com provide free printable card services. Make use of these. Get the birthday boy to choose a card he likes, print copies of it and ask him to write down names of his guests. He can then deliver the birthday invitation cards himself.

Kids Choose Goodie Bag Items

Goodie bags make birthday parties more fun. Let the birthday boy decide some of the items that should go into the bag. He can help pick out stickers, balloons, pencils or other small toys from bargain shops. Here is another useful tips for parents – collect free toys from Happy Meals or other fast food meals and use them as a goodie bag item later on.

Buy plain brown paper bags or paper lunch bags instead of colorful, themed and costly bags to hold the goodies. Then ask the child to decorate the brown bags with colors or stickers to give them a personal touch!

Kids Help Bake Birthday Cake or Cookies

This idea will appeal to many girls. Let the birthday girl help cook up a storm in the kitchen. She’ll enjoy putting on the apron and help beat the eggs and mix the cake. Go through the recipes together before choosing the cake of choice to be baked. If buying a cake from a bakery or cake shop, bring the child along to help choose the flavor and design of the cake.

Kids Decorate Birthday Party Venues

If the birthday party is held at home, the child can help put up birthday decorations like balloons and banners. She can also help make the banners herself or make confetti using old and recycled gift wraps. If the living room is to be the main venue for the party, she can help re-arrange some of the furniture to make room for the guests and party supplies.

Children’s birthday parties don’t have to be elaborate affairs. The children will be happy as long as their parties are packed with fun and they have a big role in ensuring its success. By getting kids involved in party preparations, parents also have more opportunity to spend quality time with their kids.
